Two panel reports from 2011 and 2013 had recommended that the area affected by the landslide be included in the list of eco-sensitive zones regulated by the toughest laws. However, these recommendations were rejected, and the reports were never notified.

The Congress-led UDF government's protests against the panel report findings, citing concerns about business interests, are also being scrutinized.

Additionally, the UPA government's rejection of a Central Information Commission order to make the 2011 report public in the 'societal interest' has been criticized.

As the situation unfolds, many are calling for immediate action to prevent such tragedies in the future. NDA-appointed panels are examining the issue with a view to finalizing a draft notification.
