The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced amendments to its regulatory framework for broadcasting and cable services. In a significant move, TRAI has removed the ceiling on network capacity fee, allowing service providers to determine their own charges based on market forces.

According to TRAI's new guidelines, the Network Capacity Fee (NCF) will now be driven by market forces, with charges ranging from Rs 130 for 200 channels to Rs 160 for more than 200 channels. To ensure transparency, all charges must be mandatorily published by service providers and communicated to consumers, as well as reported to TRAI.

The primary objective of these amendments is to facilitate the growth of the broadcasting sector and promote ease of doing business by simplifying regulatory provisions. The move is expected to benefit both service providers and consumers alike, with greater flexibility for operators to set their own prices and more transparency for viewers in understanding the costs associated with their subscription packages.

These changes are aimed at creating a more conducive environment for the growth of the broadcasting sector in India, which has seen significant expansion in recent years. As the industry continues to evolve, TRAI's amendments aim to strike a balance between promoting competition and protecting consumer interests.
