The Government of India has announced plans to launch Phase IV of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) aimed at providing all-weather connectivity to 25,000 rural habitations. This initiative is a significant step towards bridging the gap in rural connectivity and improving the lives of millions of people living in these areas.

Under PMGSY, the Government has already connected over 1,53,879 habitations till 2019, with an additional 8,848 habitations being provided connectivity between 2019 and 2024. The Yojana is a one-time special intervention aimed at providing rural connectivity to eligible unconnected habitations in plain areas.

The PMGSY focuses on providing a single all-weather road to each of the eligible habitations with a population of 500 persons and above (Census 2001). This will enable better access to markets, healthcare facilities, education institutions, and other essential services for the rural population.

As Phase IV of PMGSY gets underway, it will be interesting to see the progress made and the benefits that accrue to the rural population.
