The recent updates in Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 (BNS) have brought significant changes to India's criminal laws. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has tweeted about these developments, highlighting key provisions that impact the juvenile justice system.

According to Section 20 of BNS 2023, any crime committed by a child below 7 years of age is no longer considered an offence. This move aims to provide a fresh start for young individuals who may have made mistakes. Additionally, Section 27 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been deleted in BNSS 2023.

The new laws also introduce stricter guidelines for handling youthful offenders. Under Section 300 of BNS 2023, plea bargaining is not applicable to offences against children. This decision prioritizes the protection and well-being of minors.

These changes have far-reaching implications for India's criminal justice system. If a juvenile is alleged to be in conflict with the law, they must be placed with a special juvenile police unit or child welfare officer and produced before the Juvenile Justice Board within 24 hours.
