In a move aimed at ensuring adherence to the Constitution's Third Schedule, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has amended the rules related to oath-taking of newly-elected members in the Lower House. The amendment bars elected members from adding any remark, including sloganeering, while taking their oaths.

According to Rule 389 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha, the amended direction states that a Member shall make and subscribe to an oath or affirmation in accordance with the form set out for the purpose in the Third Schedule to the Constitution of India. The rule further emphasizes that no word or expression can be used as a prefix or suffix to the form of oath or affirmation.

This move aims to maintain the sanctity of the oath-taking ceremony and prevent any untoward remarks from being made by newly-elected members. The amendment is likely to have a significant impact on the way oaths are taken in the Lok Sabha, with Members now required to adhere strictly to the Constitution's guidelines.

The amended direction comes into effect immediately, and all newly-elected members will be expected to follow this new guideline when taking their oaths in the future.
